Wednesday, 1 July 2026, Johannesburg – Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Thabile Makgala and Mr Renai Moothilal as new board members.

Their appointments follow an election process conducted in accordance with the BUSA Memorandum of Incorporation, and the resignations of Ms Charlotte Mokoena and Mr Mike Mabasa earlier this year.

Both directors bring a wealth of experience, and we look forward to their contributions to the Board. We extend a warm welcome to them both.

Thabile Makglala

Thabile Makgala is the Executive Vice President: People, SHE, Risk, and Corporate Affairs at Sasol in October 2025. Thabile is responsible for advancing enterprise people performance, strengthening safety, health and environmental outcomes, enhancing risk and resilience, and positioning Sasol’s stakeholder engagement and reputation.

Thabile has held senior leadership roles at Rio Tinto, where she served as Vice President: Health, Safety, Environment, Security and Communities, leading the integration and execution of HSE strategies across operations. Prior to this, she was a Mining Executive at Implats, with full accountability for large-scale mining operations, including operational strategy, financial performance and workforce leadership.

Her earlier career includes senior roles at Gold Fields, AngloGold Ashanti and Anglo American, where she contributed to strategy, technical services, business improvement and operational excellence across multiple assets. She has received multiple industry recognitions, including Mail and Guardian Mining Woman 2021, Minerals Council South Africa Mining Modernisation Hero 2022, and Top 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.

Renai Moothilal

Renai Moothilal is the CEO and Executive Director of the National Association of Automotive Component and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM). He is also the chairman of the Automotive Industry Export Council, a director of the South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) and a member of the MerSETA, AITF and Proudly SA boards.

Renai holds the qualifications of B. Com (Hons) and MA Development Studies, (cum laude) from UKZN, and is recognised as an expert in the field of industrial policy and automotive sector development in South Africa. He is an advocate of increasing localisation rates in South Africa’s automotive value chain, supporting the sector’s transformation imperative, as well as promoting the adoption of class-leading technologies and skills among the supplier base.

Prior to NAACAM, Renai spent a decade at the Department of Trade and Industry (dti) in South Africa, mostly as a senior official in the Automotives unit. During this period, he was instrumental in managing various automotive and investment related policies and programmes.
